Parts of the oil tank and cooling

Point at a number or a part of the drawing.

  1. Steel reservoir for the machine’s oil. A baffle plate separates the return side from the suction side, so the oil settles and cools before the pump draws it again.

  2. Self-sealing filter on the pump’s suction line. A mesh element and a magnet catch dirt and iron particles before they reach the pump.

  3. Draws oil from the tank through the suction filter and delivers it to the valves.

  4. Filler cap with an air filter. It lets air in and out as the oil level changes and keeps dust out of the tank.

  5. Brings the oil back from the valves and cylinders through the cooler. It ends below the oil level, so the returning oil does not churn air into the tank.

  6. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger: cooling water flows through the tubes and the oil around them, keeping the oil temperature steady.

  7. Sight glass on the tank wall, often with a thermometer, for checking the oil level and temperature.

  8. Magnetic plug at the lowest point of the tank, for draining the oil at oil changes. Its magnet also collects iron particles.
