# Clamping cylinder of an injection molding machine

How the clamping cylinder of an injection molding (moulding) machine works: barrel, piston, seals, rod nut, rod and auxiliary cylinder, faults and quote details.

The clamping cylinder is the hydraulic cylinder that closes and opens the mold on an injection molding machine. On a toggle machine it pushes the crosshead, and the toggle links multiply its force into the full clamping force. On a direct hydraulic clamp, a larger cylinder (often called the main ram) applies the clamping force directly. In both cases it is a double-acting cylinder: a barrel closed by end caps, a piston with seals, a rod held on the piston by a nut, and a seal set where the rod leaves the cylinder. The numbered drawing above shows each part; this guide explains what each one does, how they fail and what to send for a replacement quote.

## How the clamping cylinder works in the cycle

A double-acting cylinder has an oil port at each end. Oil pumped into one chamber pushes the piston, while the oil in the other chamber returns to the tank through the valves. The rod takes up part of the piston area on the front side, so with the same pressure the cylinder pulls back with less force than it pushes, and with the same flow it moves back faster.

In each cycle the clamping cylinder goes through four stages:

1. **Mold close.** Oil enters the rear chamber and the piston moves forward. The controller runs a speed profile: a fast close, a slow-down before the mold halves touch, then a low-pressure **mold protection** stage, so that a part left in the mold stops the movement instead of being crushed.
2. **Clamp up.** On a toggle machine the cylinder straightens the links and the clamping force comes from the tie bars stretching. On a direct hydraulic clamp the pressure in the cylinder is raised until the set clamping force is reached.
3. **Injection and cooling.** The mold must stay locked. On a toggle machine the nearly straight links carry the load, so the cylinder only holds them in place; on a direct hydraulic clamp the cylinder holds the full pressure until the part has cooled.
4. **Mold open.** Oil enters the front chamber and pulls the piston back. The first movement has to break the mold open, then the platen travels fast and slows down before the open position, where ejection starts.

For how the toggle multiplies the cylinder force, see the [toggle mechanism guide](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/toggle/) and our article on the [toggle clamping system](https://www.imspares.com/blog/toggle-clamping-system-explained/).

## Parts of the clamping cylinder

### Cylinder barrel and end caps

A thick-walled steel tube with a honed bore, closed at the rear by an end cap and at the front by the gland (front head) that the rod passes through. Oil reaches the two chambers through the ports on either side of the piston. The bore is the surface the piston seals run on, so scoring or corrosion inside it destroys new seals quickly. See the [clamping cylinder](https://www.imspares.com/parts/mc-cc-01/) we supply, which is built to the dimensions of each machine.

### Piston

The piston divides the barrel into two oil chambers. Pressure on one side moves it, and the rod with it, forward or back. Besides the seals it carries **wear rings** (guide rings) that keep it centered in the bore, so the steel never touches the barrel.

### Piston seals (Y-rings)

Y-rings in the piston grooves stop oil passing from one chamber to the other. They leak inside the cylinder, so a worn piston seal never shows as an oil drip: it shows as a cylinder that moves slowly, loses force or creeps. See [piston seals](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/clamp-cylinder/piston-seals/) for how they work and how to test for bypass, and the [hydraulic cylinder seals and Y-rings](https://www.imspares.com/parts/mc-sb-08/) we supply.

### Piston rod nut

The nut holds the piston on the threaded end of the rod and is locked so it cannot work loose. A loose nut lets the piston knock on the rod, which damages the seals and the threads. See the [piston rod nut guide](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/clamp-cylinder/piston-rod-nut/).

### Piston rod

A ground, hard chrome-plated steel rod that carries the force out through the front head to the [crosshead](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/toggle/crosshead/) or the moving platen. Any scratch, dent or pitting on the chrome cuts the rod seals on every stroke, so the rod surface is checked every time the cylinder is opened.

### Rod seals and wiper

The seal set in the front head: the rod seals keep the oil in, the wiper keeps dirt out, and a guide ring keeps the rod centered. These are the seals you can see leaking. See [rod seals and wipers](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/clamp-cylinder/rod-seals/) and the [piston rod seal set](https://www.imspares.com/parts/mc-sb-07/).

### Auxiliary cylinder

A smaller cylinder used on some machines as a clamping booster or to drive the ejector. It is built and serviced like the main cylinder. See [auxiliary cylinder](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/clamp-cylinder/auxiliary-cylinder/) and the [auxiliary cylinder](https://www.imspares.com/parts/mc-cc-02/) we supply.

### Seal kits

When a cylinder is opened, all its seals are normally replaced together as a kit: piston seals, wear rings, rod seals, wiper and the static O-rings. The step-by-step procedure is in [replacing cylinder seals](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/clamp-cylinder/cylinder-seal-replacement/).

## Common clamping cylinder problems

- **Oil on the rod or dripping from the front head**: worn rod seals or wiper, or a scored rod.
- **Mold closes or opens more slowly** at the same settings, or clamp-up takes longer: oil passing the piston seals, or a problem on the hydraulic side.
- **Mold drifts or the cylinder creeps** when its valve is in the neutral position: piston seal bypass or valve leakage.
- **Not enough force to break a sticking mold open**: oil passing the piston seals, or low pressure from the hydraulic side.
- **Knocking at the end of a stroke**: a speed profile that does not slow down in time, or a loose rod nut.
- **Oil running hotter than usual**: oil leaking across a piston or a valve turns pressure into heat.
- **Scored, pitted or flaking chrome** on the rod.

Many of these symptoms also come from the hydraulic system: a worn pump, a leaking directional or proportional valve, or a relief valve set too low. Check the pressure before you open the cylinder. Our article on [troubleshooting hydraulic pressure loss](https://www.imspares.com/blog/troubleshooting-hydraulic-pressure-loss/) gives a step-by-step test, and the [hydraulic system guide](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/hydraulics/) explains the rest of the circuit.

## What to send for a replacement quote

To quote a clamping cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder, a seal kit or a rod nut, send:

1. The machine brand, model and serial number, and its clamping force.
2. Which cylinder it is: the main clamping cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder, or another cylinder on the machine.
3. The bore, the rod diameter and the stroke.
4. For seals: the groove dimensions, or the codes printed on the old seals, or the OEM seal kit number. Photos of the old seals laid out in order help.
5. For a complete cylinder: the mounting type and its dimensions, the port sizes and positions, the rod end, and photos of the cylinder and its nameplate.
6. For a rod nut: the thread size and pitch, the outside dimensions and how it is locked.

## Maintenance that makes the cylinder last

- Look at the rod and the front head every day for oil. A small leak caught early is a seal kit; a leak left running scores the rod.
- Keep the rod clean, and protect it from impacts and weld spatter during mold changes and repairs.
- Set the speed profile so the cylinder slows down before the end of each stroke.
- Keep the oil clean, dry and at its working temperature: see [hydraulic oil](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/hydraulics/hydraulic-oil/), the [oil filter](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/hydraulics/oil-filter/) and [oil temperature](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/hydraulics/oil-temperature/).
- On a toggle machine, keep the toggle lubricated and the crosshead guides in good condition. Side load on the rod wears the guide ring and the rod seals on one side. See [toggle lubrication](https://www.imspares.com/injection-molding-machine-parts/toggle/toggle-lubrication/).
- When the cylinder is opened, replace the whole seal kit, measure the bore and the rod, and check the rod nut and its locking before reassembly.

## Questions

### What does the clamping cylinder do on an injection molding machine?

The clamping cylinder is the hydraulic cylinder that closes and opens the mold. On a toggle machine it drives the crosshead and the toggle links multiply its force into the clamping force; on a direct hydraulic clamp, a large cylinder applies the clamping force directly.

### How do I know if the clamping cylinder seals are leaking?

Oil on the piston rod or dripping from the front head means the rod seals or the wiper are worn. Slow or weak movement, or a cylinder that creeps when its valve is closed, points to oil passing the piston seals, but a leaking valve gives the same symptoms, so test before opening the cylinder.

### Can the seals be replaced without removing the clamping cylinder?

It depends on the machine. Rod seals in the front head can sometimes be changed with the cylinder in place once the head is removed, while piston seals need the piston and rod taken out of the barrel. The machine manual shows the procedure and the lifting points.

### Why does the clamping cylinder knock at the end of its stroke?

The most common reasons are a speed profile that does not slow the movement before the end position, or a loose piston rod nut that lets the piston move on the rod. Check the settings first, then the rod nut when the cylinder is opened.

### What information is needed to quote a clamping cylinder or seal kit?

The machine brand, model, serial number and clamping force, which cylinder it is, and its bore, rod diameter and stroke. For seals, add the groove dimensions or the codes printed on the old seals; for a complete cylinder, add the mounting and port details and photos of the nameplate.
